Carolyn Bell, founder and lead coach of Competitive Edge Volleyball has a passion for volleyball and a desire for helping athletes succeed in sport and life. Coach Bell's most formative experiences have been working in higher education and coaching the sport of volleyball. She has had the opportunity to coach a variety of age and skill levels ranging from kindergarten through the college level and professional athlete. All of these experiences have provided her with a solid foundation to develop, transform, and implement athletic programming well.
Coach Bell recently moved from Rochester, Minnesota to Buffalo, New York. She is currently working as the assistant coach at Division II Daemen College and working with the Niagara Frontier Volleyball 18-1 program. She recently finished up her 5th season as head coach at Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) in Rochester, Minnesota. During her tenure, the program reached a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finish at the Minnesota College’s Athletic Conference state tournament, and a 2nd and 3rd place finish in the NJCAA region 13 tournament. Since 2008 the team was consistently ranked 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the NJCAA Division III national polls and boasts a 101 and 26 overall record.
Coach Bell's career is varied. In Minnesota it began with coaching the Southern Minnesota Volleyball (SMV) 18-1 program. Over the course of 9 years, she led several teams to top place finishes in the most competitive open power leagues in Minnesota and finished top ten at national qualifying events and AAU. She also took the initiative to develop and implement the Rochester Youth Volleyball Association (RYVA) volley-tot and mini-ball programs which started with 30 children in 2008 and bloomed to 140 registrants in 2011. She also spent her summers organizing and leading high school camps and was a head coach for the prestigious Spike Performance Camps, as well.
She has served in several leadership roles locally and regionally. With RYVA she was the coaching director, summer camp director, in and off-season training program director, and board member. At the regional office, she was appointed to the North Country Region Board of Directors.
Coach Bell started Competitive Edge Volleyball (CEV) to educate athletes about the biomechanics of the approach and arm swing using the SoloSpike and Dartfish Analysis systems. Her goal is to train players on how to prevent knee, back, and shoulder injury while simultaneously utilizing the most effective hitting methods to reach their highest level of performance on the court. As a part of the business model, she offers private lessons and conducts sport psychology consulting for individuals and teams. CEV has been very successful thus far with over 100 athletes trained in 2011 from all over the Midwest, California, and Texas.
Overall, Coach Bell truly values the significance of education and this is exemplified by the fact that she has earned two graduate degrees focusing on coaching, psychology and sport science. Her players are taught that education is first, but the commitment to a team experience is what makes them well-rounded and successful people. Coach Bell's combination of training and experience enables her to contribute to an athlete's growth as both a person and player.
